9 Ways to Increase Energy

1. Maintain adequate hydration: While it used to be said that the average sedentary person should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, this has come into question. Some experts say that this includes foods that contain water. In addition, while the thirst mechanism is said to kick in when it is too late, there is also some question about this. Exercise, heat and other variables also affect how much water one should drink. Thus, all I can offer is a personal reflection which is: when I want to increase my energy, I sometimes drink water and this seems to bring me back to life even when I have not consciously recognized that I am thirsty.

2. Diet: The best personal experience I can offer here is: get that breakfast in. Skipping breakfast is tempting when one is on the go, but breakfast is a very important meal and just eating breakfast can make you feel much more energetic throughout the day. I do love satisfying meals, but I find that if I do not keep my lunch light, I feel an energy drain in the afternoon. I have often thought that siestas were a good idea, but this doesn’t really fit in with most of our lifestyles.

3. Meditation: I have noticed that meditating twice a day for at least 20 minutes at a time significantly increases my energy. My thought processes seem to be more efficient.

4. Short naps: A short nap in the middle of the day (5-10 minutes) can do wonders. Some research has shown that 60-minute power naps can be very restorative but a usual day for me does not allow this.

5. Music: For me, listening to music that I love on the way to work gives me a much needed energy boost. Sometimes, having the radio on and suddenly hearing a song I love gives me a thrill and euphoria that lasts throughout the day.

6. Exercise and regular stretching: I find that when I exercise, I usually feel more energetic, especially directly after exercising. A brief stint of dancing or going for a walk can also help.

7. Concentrating: Getting absorbed in my work allows me to focus and this focus seems to decrease my energy requirements. When I am more scattered, this is also more draining. Thus, focus is not just a result of having more energy but it can increase energy as well.

8. Giving: Giving a loved one a little gift can be such an energizing experience. Any random act of kindness can be energizing. Receiving can also be wonderful when the opportunity arises.

9. Letting go of negative mind states: Addressing anger and forgiving can be wonderful ways to suddenly enhance energy. Often, our brains are drained by something that has been unaddressed. The anticipation is worse than the event. When something is troubling you, address it as soon as you can. This will cause great relief and a surge of energy.

What Surprising Exercise Cuts Your Cancer Risk by 40 Percent?

Men with stronger muscles from regular weight training are up to 40 percent less likely to die from cancer, according to new research.

The findings suggest that muscular strength is as important as staying slim and eating healthy when it comes to protecting your body against deadly tumors.

A team of experts tracked the lifestyles of over 8,500 men for more than two decades. Each volunteer had regular medical check ups that included tests of their muscular strength. The men who regularly worked out with weights and had the highest muscle strength were between 30 percent and 40 percent less likely to lose their life to a deadly tumor.

Even among volunteers who were overweight, regular weight training seemed to have a protective effect, although the researchers stressed that keeping a healthy weight was still crucial for avoiding premature death.

But they added, "In the light of these results, it is equally important to maintain healthy muscular strength levels.”

Researchers said it’s possible to reduce cancer mortality rates in men by promoting resistance training involving the major muscle groups at least two days a week.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

The results of this study -- that men who regularly work out with weights and have high muscle strength can reduce their risk of cancer by 30-40 percent -- should provide major motivation for any of you still on the fence about adding strength training to your exercise routine.

One of the primary reasons exercise works to lower your cancer risk is because it drives your insulin levels down. Controlling insulin levels is one of the most powerful ways to reduce your cancer risks.

It’s also been suggested that apoptosis (programmed cell death) is triggered by exercise, causing cancer cells to die.

It is becoming increasingly clear that a well-rounded exercise program is an important component of staying healthy. When I say “well rounded” I mean a program that includes the four primary types of exercise, as explained in my Principles of Exercise video:

1. Aerobic
2. Interval
3. Strength
4. Core

Unfortunately, many public health guidelines are still focusing only on the aerobic component, and merely focusing on aerobic activity will most definitely lead to imbalances that will cause other parts of your body to not be healthy. You really need a well balanced exercise regimen.

It’s important to vary your exercise routine as otherwise your muscles simply get used to the same activity. They require a level of muscle confusion if they are to continue to improve and grow stronger. Further, each type of exercise has very different and very specific impacts on your body, and you’ll want to take advantage of all of them.

This topic is truly very near and dear to my heart, as I went to medical school in large part because I wanted to use exercise as a therapeutic tool to help people get healthier. I strongly believe that without fitness, it is virtually impossible to achieve optimal health.

The Benefits of Strength Training

As you age your muscle mass diminishes, and strength training is one of the best ways to replace the lean muscle mass that you’ve lost. If you don’t challenge your muscles in this way, the percentage of fat in your body will keep increasing while your muscle mass will keep decreasing.

So strength training is of utmost importance as you get older, but should ideally be done regularly throughout your life to both preserve and enhance your muscle mass.

Strength training also offers these additional benefits:

• Increases your bone density while lowering your risk of osteoporosis
• Lose weight (the more muscle you have, the more efficiently your body burns calories)
• Protects your joints from injury
• Helps maintain flexibility and balance
• Improves your stamina and lessens fatigue

How to Use Strength Training for Optimal Benefits

Contrary to popular belief, a 1-set strength training routine is typically plenty to get the most out of your workout.

A study published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise confirmed that for the average person exercising by strength training, the number of repetitions (the number of times a muscle or group of muscles is used to lift a weight) is not of major importance; a single set of repetitions was found to be almost as effective in maintaining fitness as three sets.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) -- the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world -- and the U.S. Surgeon General have also been recommending a 1-set exercise program for some time.

So incorporating a simple 1-set, five- to 30-minute weight lifting routine into your regular program will definitely improve fitness, and is a practical, obtainable goal for most people. There are some key concepts to keep in mind, however, as not just any set of weight training will do.

You need to do enough repetitions to exhaust your muscles. The weight should be heavy enough that this can be done in fewer than 12 repetitions, yet light enough to do a minimum of four repetitions. It is also important NOT to exercise the same muscle groups every day. They need at least two days of rest to recover, repair and rebuild -- more is not better here.

Later this year I plan on introducing a comprehensive state of the art comprehensive personal training option that can easily guide you through this entire process.

How to Round Out Your Exercise Routine, and Why You Should

I highly recommend finding a personal trainer to help you reach your fitness goals, but if you cannot afford it or live in an area without access to one, you can still reap the benefits of exercise if you focus on varying your routine. So along with your strength training program, make sure you also incorporate the following into your exercise routine:

1. Aerobic: Jogging, using an elliptical machine, and walking fast are all examples of aerobic exercise. As you get your heart pumping, the amount of oxygen in your blood improves, and endorphins, which act as natural painkillers, increase.

Meanwhile, aerobic exercise activates your immune system, helps your heart pump blood more efficiently, and increases your stamina over time.

2. Interval (Anaerobic) Training: Research is showing that the BEST way to condition your heart and burn fat is NOT to jog or walk steadily for an hour. Instead, it’s to alternate short bursts of high-intensity exercise with gentle recovery periods.

This type of exercise, known as interval training or burst type training, can dramatically improve your cardiovascular fitness and fat-burning capabilities.

For example, intermittent sprinting produces high levels of chemical compounds called catecholamines, which allow more fat to be burned from under your skin within the exercising muscles. The resulting increase in fat oxidation increases weight loss. So, short bursts of activity done at a very high intensity can help you reach your optimal weight and level of fitness, in a shorter amount of time.

3. Core Exercises: Your body has 29 core muscles located mostly in your back, abdomen and pelvis. This group of muscles provides the foundation for movement throughout your entire body, and strengthening them can help protect and support your back, make your spine and body less prone to injury and help you gain greater balance and stability.

Exercise programs like Pilates and yoga are great for strengthening your core muscles, as are specific exercises you can learn from a personal trainer.

Ready to Get Started?

More than half of U.S. adults don’t get the recommended amount of exercise, and one out of four don’t exercise at all.

Why?

A lack of time is the most common reason given for not exercising.

To help avoid falling into this trap, you need to arrange your schedule around exercise. Plan it into your day the same way you would an important meeting and consider it non-negotiable, like mealtimes and sleep.

When you begin to view exercise as a necessary component to your health, rather than a luxury, it becomes easier to find time for it during even the busiest days. For you, the best time to exercise may be first thing in the morning. Others may find early afternoon to work best.

The important key to remember is that it doesn’t matter when you exercise (with the exception of exercising too close to bedtime, which can keep you awake), just that you make time for it most days of the week.

For more information on how to get the most benefits from exercise, including proper intensity and duration, read through this comprehensive article Exercise to Improve Your Body and Brain.

HINDI KA NA MANANALO, ERAP

(saw this one from Facebook)

You don't know your history. You don't know when to quit.

Why many Filipinos are like Jason Bourne

Opinion
Why many Filipinos are like Jason Bourne
AS I WRECK THIS CHAIR By William M. Esposo Philstar: Updated May 24, 2009 12:00 AM

Actor Matt Damon’s portrayal of the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) programmed assassin Jason Bourne was such a box office success that it became a movie trilogy — The Bourne identity, The Bourne supremacy and The Bourne ultimatum.

Jason Bourne, the movie character, was a patriot who wanted to serve his country and save American lives. His patriotic zeal was taken advantage of by the CIA when they indoctrinated him to be a programmed assassin. The CIA erased Jason Bourne’s recollection of his real identity and transformed him into a killing machine of sorts.
What his programmers did not anticipate was that Bourne’s humanity would override his destructive programming. He sensed that he was not doing a noble mission. Bourne started to ask questions and seek the truth about his past. He wanted to liberate and rescue his soul.

Many Filipinos are familiar with the character of Jason Bourne after having watched at least one of the three Bourne movies. However, many Filipinos might not have realized that they too are suffering from the problem of Jason Bourne.

Like Jason Bourne, many Filipinos do not know their real history. Jason Bourne succeeded though in sorting out his problem. Bourne had finally caught up with what made him a programmed assassin of the CIA while many Filipinos continue to remain clueless about how we were programmed to collectively fail by former and current masters.
Jason Bourne may have been a fictional character but his struggle is a realistic portrayal of human suffering resulting from not knowing one’s history. The people who created Jason Bourne did not want him to know who made him a programmed assassin. They just want him to continue killing for them.

Like Jason Bourne, the colonizers and the neo-colonizers that brought us Filipinos to our current sorry state do not want us to know who they are and what they did to us. You can’t solve a problem that you’re not even aware of. Like Jason Bourne, it serves the interests of those who brought us to this pass — to keep us in the dark and thus continue to exploit us.
After Jason Bourne became a rogue programmed assassin and started to ask dangerous questions, his CIA programmers activated other programmed assassins to hunt and eliminate him. Like Jason Bourne and his fellow programmed assassins, Filipinos have been calibrated to fight one another in keeping with the old doctrine for imperial control — divide and rule.

Jason Bourne was indoctrinated to murder anyone tagged by his programmers as an “enemy of the state” and this included his fellow Americans who just happened to be ‘inconvenient’ to the CIA. Bourne was programmed not to discern why he is going to kill a designated target.

Like Jason Bourne, many Filipinos have been programmed to despise and reject fellow Filipinos identified as “enemies of the state” by the colonizers and the current neo-colonizers – the Filipino oligarchs. Over the last 200 years, the tag “enemy of the state” has been programmed into the Filipino psyche as “rebolusyonaryo,” “Katipunero,” “Communist,” “militant,” “destabilizer” and “anachronistic nationalist.”

Few Filipinos wonder how come it is legal here to promote foreign interests and illegal to protect Filipino interests. Few Filipinos wonder why it is considered bad over here to be a nationalist when other countries admire and honor their nationalists.

Many Filipinos will automatically dismiss what the so-called “enemies of the state” are fighting for without even analyzing if these are causes that they too should be fighting for. If the so-called ‘militants’ are protesting the ceding of our precious mining resources to foreigners, many Filipinos fail to realize that this is their resources and unthinkingly become apathetic to the issue.

We fail to consider that just because we do not believe in Communism — it does not mean that Filipinos who are associated with it have no valid ideas to contribute to improve our lives. If you care to study the analyses of the Leftist groups of the Philippine socio-economic- political problems, you will find that these are correct assessments.
It is a fact that the root causes of our problems are imperialism (as exemplified by the US Parity Rights, the US-sponsored Marcos martial law, the US interest to push the MILF-BJE deal and China’s taking over of Philippine natural resources) and feudalism (political warlords and dynasties rule many provinces and districts). It is a fact that we suffer from a big Wealth Gap where too few have too much and too many have too little.
Where we differ with the Left is their offered solution. After Russia and China have veered away from it and became capitalists, Communism is now an even harder sell. If we did not buy it four decades ago, we are certainly not going to buy it now.

However, when the Leftists are advocating nationalism, patriotism, preservation of Philippine natural resources, asserting Philippine sovereignty and the like — do we reject these simply because the advocates are Leftists? Because the devil quotes scripture, do we then also reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

In this regard, Jason Bourne is a hero because he had a soul that questioned if his program was just and moral. He changed from a programmed assassin to the man who was able to expose a devious CIA murder program.

In the third Bourne movie, David Webb (Bourne’s real name) reminded the other programmed assassin (who was about to shoot him) to search his soul. The other programmed assassin did not even know why he was tasked to kill Jason Bourne.
It is high time that we Filipinos start searching our Filipino souls and find out why we are in this seemingly perpetual hell. We should know what brought us to hell and who were the persons responsible for all the exploitation, predation and prostitution of our people?

Mirror of Eternity

Place your mind before the mirror of eternity!
Place your soul in the brilliance of glory!
Place your heart in the figure of the divine substance!
And transform your whole being into the image of the Godhead Itself
through contemplation!
So that you too may feel what His friends feel
as they taste the hidden sweetness
which God Himself has reserved
from the beginning
for those who love Him.

Haaaaayyy nako....

Konting disiplina naman oh, kung pwede lang??

Prayer for a Happy Death by Former President Cory Aquino

Prayer for a Happy Death

Almighty God, most merciful Father
You alone know the time
You alone know the hour
You alone know the moment
When I shall breathe my last.
So, remind me each day,
most loving Father
To be the best that I can be.
To be humble, to be kind,
To be patient, to be true.
To embrace what is good,
To reject what is evil,
To adore only You.
When the final moment does come
Let not my loved ones grieve for long.
Let them comfort each other
And let them know
how much happiness
They brought into my life.
Let them pray for me,
As I will continue to pray for them,
Hoping that they will always pray
for each other.
Let them know that they made possible
Whatever good I offered to our world.
And let them realize that our separation
Is just for a short while
As we prepare for our reunion in eternity.
Our Father in heaven,
You alone are my hope.
You alone are my salvation.
Thank you for your unconditional love, Amen.

80/20 Rule Interesting quote from the movie 'Why did I get married?'

(from an e-mail)

VERY INSPIRING

80/20 Rule

Interesting quote from the movie 'Why did I get married?'

In most cases, especially in relationships, you will only get 80% of what you NEED and you will hardly get the other 20% that you WANT in your relationship. There is always another person (man or women) that you will meet and that will offer you the other 20% which is lacking in your relationship that you WANT. And believe me, 20% looks really good when you are not getting it at all in your current relationship.

But the problem is that you will always be tempted to leave that good 80% that you know you have, thinking that you will get something better with the other 20% that you WANT.
But as reality has proven, in most cases, you will always end up with having the 20% that you WANT and loosing the 80% that you really NEED and that you already had.

Be careful in deciding between what you WANT and NEED in your life.

Adultery happens when you start looking for what you don't have. 'Wow, this girl in my office is a real looker. But it's not her Wynona Rider features that got me. I'm crazy about her because she's also understanding, intelligent, tender - so many things that my spouse is not' .

Somewhere along the way, you'll find a woman or a man who will be more charming or sensitive. More alluring. More thoughtful. Richer. Have greater sex appeal. And you will find a woman or man who will need you and pursue you and go loco over you more than your spouse ever did.

Because no wife or husband is perfect. Because a spouse will only have 80% of what you're looking for. So adultery takes place when a husband or wife looks for the missing 20%. Let's say your wife is melancholic by nature.

You may find yourself drawn to the pretty clerk who has a cherry laugh no matter what she says: 'I broke my arm yesterday, Hahahaha . . ..'

Or because your wife is a homebody in slippers and pajamas, smelling of garlic and fish oil, you may fall for a fresh-smelling young sales representative that visits your office in a sharp black blazer, high heels, and a red pencil-cut skirt Or because your husband is the quiet type, your heart may skip a beat when you meet an old college flame who has the makings of a talk show host.

But wait! That's only 20% of what you don't have.

Don't throw away the 80% that you already have!

That's not all. Add to your spouse's 80% the 100% that represents all the years that you have been with each other. The storms you have weathered together. The unforgettable moments of sadness and joy as a couple. The many adjustments you have made to love the other. The wealth of memories that you've accumulated as lovers.

Adultery happens when you start looking for what you don't have.

But faithfulness happens when you start thanking God for what you already have.

But I'm not just talking about marriage.

Happiness keeps you Sweet,

Trials keeps you Strong,

Sorrow keeps you Human,

Failure keeps you Humble

And

Success keeps you glowing…

But only Faith and Attitude keeps you going....

Let's help save lives!

To donate blood was what I really wanted to do when I was in college - not just because of the very cute blood droplet doll and the lollies that there were giving away! :P But because I wanted to help. Unfortunately, I was underweight :(

14th of June is the World Blood Donor Day, donating blood is really more than donating cash or kind because nothing else could really replace it. So go out, look for blood banks and let's do it. (Once again, I'm gonna try - I'm now eating lots and lotsa food as a preparation you know ) :D

Let's help save lives! :)

"... that every relationship rests on three legs: accepting, supporting and challenging."

got a message from God and here it is:

God wants her to know...
"... that every relationship rests on three legs: accepting, supporting and challenging."

That's really it, isn't it? You want your relationships to be grounded on accepting each other as you are. On supporting each other through the inevitable ups and downs. On challenging each other to become more, to grow, to flourish. Which one of these is the more difficult one for you, and how are you going to practice it in the next 24 hours?

now.. think.. think.. think!!!

"vampire-slayer"

Concerned people + Mother Earth = Earth Day

Concerned people + Mother Earth = Earth Day

I am a self-confessed obsessed in saving the Earth in my own little ways. I am an OC when it comes to these things. For example: plastics - if I believe it is still in a good condition, I would still use it over again (a hundred times if that would be possible!), scratch papers - I have LOADS of them! Especially when I was still in college. (I COLLECT them!) In this way, I can help save many trees. Also I never litter (I try my best not to!) . I hate it when I see people doing that.

So why not celebrate Earth Day everyday not just for one day? In our own little ways, we can help! Teach the young ones too - it's just easy, you don't have to be an adult to do it ;)

South Korean Black Day

Right, so they had White Day on March 14 (it is the opposite of Valentine's day), and for the month of April (14th) Koreans in South Korea celebrate Black Day. Very intriguing huh? Well, Black Day is for the single young people. They would wear black suit on this day - as if to announce to the world that they are single and very much available. They would also eat Jajangmyeon (noodles with black bean sauce).

I laughed hard upon hearing this from one of my students because I think it's kind of cute.

A martyr - not proud of being one

I don't understand why until now he's still being irresponsible. We already have a kid, he's the man, he should be the one who's making a living, not me. How the heck can we save for the future of our daughter if he will just be like that forever. I cannot do these things just by myself. I need help, I need a partner - not a man who would just bum around watching TV, drink alcohol, ask money from me for his vices. A martyr? Yep, you can call me that, I really am. But i am not proud to be one.

I just can't live him like that. Maybe for the fact that there is this thing called "love" that I feel for him, but because I feel pity for this guy. He didn't come from a role model family, in fact, you would not dream of becoming a part of them. His dad - used to have a mistress (and maybe until now!), would always hit his children right away when they did something bad, his mom - dedicated her life to majhong and "tong-its", she can live in a casino for 2-3 days without taking a bath, changing her clothes, or even without thinking if her kids have already eaten.

Life.. :(

my students told me that she will be attending a cherry blossoms festival - it's boring for her but sounds exciting for me. why? because of the fact that we don't have these here in the philippines (we don't have, right??) okay anyway, just hearing the name of it makes my heart jump, i really really wanna see one. :)

recharged once again

after a not-so-long vacation, it's time to work again.. it's really difficult to wake up in the morning - in fact, i hate it - i really am not a morning person.. sheesh.. how many times do i need to rant about this? but good thing, i really enjoyed the holy week, it felt good to have your energy recharged - very refreshing for me.

Rocket fuel chemical found in baby formula

By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer - Fri Apr 3, 3:36 AM PDT

ATLANTA - Traces of a chemical used in rocket fuel were found in samples of powdered baby formula, and could exceed what's considered a safe dose for adults if mixed with water also contaminated with the ingredient, a government study has found.

The study by scientists at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked for the chemical, perchlorate, in different brands of powdered baby formula. It was published last month, but the Environmental Working Group issued a press release Thursday drawing attention to it.

The chemical has turned up in several cities' drinking water supplies. It can occur naturally, but most perchlorate contamination has been tied to defense and aerospace sites.

No tests have ever shown the chemical caused health problems, but scientists have said significant amounts of perchlorate can affect thyroid function. The thyroid helps set the body's metabolism. Thyroid problems can impact fetal and infant brain development.

However, the extent of the risk is hard to assess. The government requires that formula contain iodine, which counteracts perchlorate's effects. The size of the infant and how much formula they consume are other factors that can influence risk.

The study itself sheds little light on how dangerous the perchlorate in baby formula is. "This wasn't a study of health effects," said Dr. Joshua Schier, one of the authors.

The largest amounts of the chemical were in formulas derived from cow's milk, the study said.

The researchers would not disclose the brands of formula they studied. Only a few samples were studied, so it's hard to know if the perchlorate levels would be found in all containers of those brands, a CDC spokesman said.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it was considering setting new limits on the amount of perchlorate that would be acceptable in drinking water. A few states have already set their own limits.

The EPA has checked nearly 4,000 public water supplies serving 10,000 people or more. About 160 of the water systems had detectable levels of perchlorate, and 31 had levels high enough to exceed a new safety level the EPA is considering.

North Korea is planning to launch missiles

I don't understand why North Korea would want to test some missiles, what is their purpose?? Do they really want to be that powerful? Before they do this thing, they should also consider the effect that it will bring to other countries. Many people will get affected, they should not be selfish.. This issue is very alarming.. Very, very alarming I could say.

What to do when you are trapped in a lift?

We never know when and where accidents will happen to us OR people around us.

Read on and hope this piece of information may help any of us when things do happen to ourselves, our friends and our loved ones.

One day, while in a lift, it suddenly broke down and it was falling from level 13 at a fast speed.
Fortunately, I remembered watching a TV program that taught you must quickly press all the buttons for all the levels.
Finally, the lift stopped at the 5th level.

When you are facing life and death situations, whatever decisions or actions you make decides your survival.
If you are caught in a lift breakdown, first thought in mind may be 'waiting to die'...

But after reading below, things will definitely be different the next time you are caught in a lift.

First – Quickly press all the different levels of buttons in the lift.

Second – Hold on tight to the handle (if there is any).

Third – Lean your back and head against the wall forming a straight line.

Fourth – Bend your knees
Reason – When the lift falls, you will not know when it will hit the ground, and it may result in whole body bone fracture.

Point 1 – When the emergency electricity supply is being activated, it will stop the lift from falling further.

Point 2 – It is to support your position and prevent you from falling or getting hurt when you lost your balance.

Point 3 – Leaning against the wall is to use it as a support for your back/spine as protection.

Point 4 – Ligament is a flexible, connective tissue. It can be attached to the bone part of the activities, but limit the scope of their activities in order to avoid injury.
Thus, the impact of fractured bones will be minimised from the severe pressure during fall.

3-days off for the holy week

we were only given 3 days to rest for this coming holy week by our Korean boss, April 7-9, 2009 (Tuesday-Thursday) - hmmm.. not bad, but the thing is, Friday (or Good Friday) is the holiest day for us Filipinos, but he cannot understand it. *sigh*

recipe for Korean Kalbi Jim

After pulkogi, kalbi-jim is perhaps the second most popular Korean beef dish. Meaty short ribs are marinated in traditional seasonings, then cooked long and slow, until the meat gelatins form a deep, rich glaze. By the time it is done, the tender beef is practically falling from the bones, and the sauce is thick with flavor. This is a wonderful cold-weather dish, for the heat of the stove warms the house, and the aromas of the simmering sauce tantalize the appetite. It takes a while to cook, but most of the cooking time is relatively effortless, leaving the chef to dine relaxed and unhurried.
Ingredients

* 4 pounds beef short ribs
* 4 cloves garlic, minced
* 1 inch piece of ginger, peeled and minced
* 5 green onions, chopped
* 4 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
* 1/4 cup dry sherry
* 1/2 cup soy sauce
* 3 tablespoons sesame oil
* 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
* fresh cracked pepper
* 1 tablespoon peanut oil
* 1 onion, chopped
* 2 carrots, chopped
* 2-1/2 cups water

Preparation

Trim the ribs of excess fat. Score the top surface of the ribs in a diamond pattern.

In a container or plastic bag large enough to hold the ribs, mix together the garlic, ginger, green onions, 3 tablespoons of the sesame seeds, sherry, soy sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar and a generous grating of pepper. Add the ribs and coat thoroughly with the marinade. Refrigerate for at least 5 hours, preferably overnight.

To cook the ribs, heat the peanut oil in a heavy pot or flameproof casserole large enough to accommodate the ribs. Brown the ribs, then push the ribs to one side and brown the onions and carrots in the same pot. Stir in the marinade and the water. Bring the mixture to a boil, then simmer, with the lid slightly ajar, for 1-1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

To finish the dish, remove the lid and boil until the sauce gets a syrup-like consistency. Serve the ribs with the glazed sauce and the remaining sesame seeds on top.

Serving Suggestion:
Steamed white rice and a spicy cucumber and radish salad are the perfect accompaniments.

Serves 4

RECOGNIZING A STROKE:

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR ... Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE, coherently. (i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue... If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke..

Guardian interview From Paulo Coelho

Some people see you as a guru. Do you accept that?

Of course not.

Is it flattering?

No. It’s totally out of reality.

Are you a political writer?

Everybody is a political person, whether you say something or you are silent. A political attitude is not whether you go to parliament, it’s how you deal with your life, with your surroundings. I am at least giving the readers the sense they are not alone. But instead of trying to answer the question, “What is the meaning of life?” I try to give some meaning to my life.

When you were 17 your parents had you committed to an asylum.

Yes, three times, and also I was in jail three times, but I never saw myself as a victim. This is part of my journey. My parents wanted me to follow their dreams, not my dreams, and the simple fact that I didn’t accept that does not make me a criminal or an outcast. I thought, “One day I will write about it,” and I did. I wrote Veronica Decides to Die, and the book was about this: accept your differences and this is how you make a difference.

laught trip (pops and jomari break-up)

The very solemn reason behind the Pops-Jomari breakup

Concert Queen Pops Fernandez and Jomari Yllana have each confirmed their breakup but neither has spoken up about the real reason behind it, prompting rumors that money-related matters or a possible third party caused it.
But Good Times Manila learned from a source who personally witnessed the breakup that neither of those was the real reason.
According to the source, a waiter at a five-star hotel where the breakup became official, the couple had a “long and calm” discussion until they arrived at a mutual agreement to split up.
GTM asked the source to reconstruct the scene as well as the dialogue.
Disclaimer: GTM is not responsible for any creative or dramatic license the source might have added to the source material, like what ABS-CBN’s anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya did.
The source’s account follows:
Pops: …what I’m just saying is, it’s not right.
Jomari: Ano’ng ibig mo’ng sabihin? I already said it meant nothing.
Pops: It obviously meant something. You were both laughing like crazy.
Jomari: So what if we were? Usapang lalaki lang yun, babe.
Pops: Why won’t you just tell me what you were talking about?
Jomari: Bakit?
Pops: No naman. My point simply is I want to know.
Jomari: Why?
Pops: I don’t know.
Jomari: See? You don’t even know.
Pops: Pero why don’t you just say it kasi? Nakakahiya ba?
Jomari: No. Nothing like that. Like I said, usapang lalaki lang yun.
Pops: Usapang lalaki. But we talk about stuff like that all the time, di ba? What’s different here?
Jomari: We don’t talk about that. Babe, just leave it. Please?
Pops: I don’t want to.
Jomari: Why are you so curious?
Pops: Because you were laughing so hard and you were both looking at me! Sino’ng hindi macu-curious?
Jomari: Shempre nandun ka sa loob. Sino pa’ng titingnan namin? Nobody else was inside the pet shop.
Pops: So what were you laughing about?
Jomari: Wala nga, babe e.
Pops: Was it about me?
Jomari: No!
Pops: It’s about me yata e.
Jomari: I swear it’s NOT.
Pops: I’m going to walk out.
Jomari: C’mon babe. Sit down.
Pops: Joms, if you don’t tell me what you were talking about, I’m walking out now.
Jomari: You really want to know?
Pops: Yes!
Jomari: Okay. But before I say it, I want you to know that it had nothing to do with you.
Pops: Bakit my disclaimer pa?
Jomari: E kilala kita e. Basta just hear out the whole story first, okay?
Pops: Okay fine.
Jomari: Tito Dougs was saying kelangan nya nang janitor fish for his aquarium. To keep it clean.
Pops: Okay.
Jomari: And I said “Sa bahay namin hindi na kelangan ng janitor fish.”
Pops: (quiet)
Jomari: Then he started laughing. Babe, why are you so quiet?
Pops: (quiet)
Jomari: Babe? When he started laughing, naki-join na lang ako. I don’t know what he found funny.
Pops: (quiet)
Jomari: Babe? It had nothing to do with you, I swear. Babe?
Pops: (quiet)
Jomari: C’mon, babe? Sorry na please… You’re so beautiful. Sinong mag-aakalang janitor fish ka?
Pops: Read. My. Lips. It’s OVER! (walks out)
Jomari: (calls out) Babe! You’re beautiful!

The Master Rapper is already in his MASTER...

Sir Kiko, we love you, nag-iisa ka lang.. see you at the crossroads...

Happy White Day!! :)

i learned something new again today! tomorrow (march 14) will be the White Day in Korea, Japan also celebrate it. so what is it? my student said that it's the "opposite" of valentine's day - i'm still curious because she was not able to explain it to me very well "googled" it (oh, i love to google all the time!) :D and i found out that women are the one who give presents - chocolates to be specific to men, then it's the men's turn to give something to them on a White Day. cool. :)

dog-tired

can't wait for the weekend.. i'm already dog-tired now.. hate to admit it, but i think i'm beginning to be workaholic - hmmm.. or maybe not! because i'm still looking forward to have some rests.. for so me breaks... for more naps.. or sleep rather! but i still can't.. 1 more day to go!!!

a "vampire" dream

i was Über late with my 1st class today (7:00 am), mom just woke me up at 7:20, good thing still early for my next class. (FYI, i just work at home) :) but i made it up to my Korean student (yep, imah teacher to Koreans), i adjusted our time, from 7am, I asked her if we can study at 8am, fortunately, twas okay with her, yey!

i duno why, but maybe because my dream was soooo nice :) haha.. i dreamt that i was a vampire (okay, this is nothing to do with Twilight) :p but not just a vampire - their most special one! the princess (or maybe the queen?) i'm not just so sure, but my "people" were trying to protect me from the other kind of vampire - yep, there were two kinds in my dream, i'm not just sure whether we are the good one or not. anyways, they were fighting and asked me to hide so that our enemy won't see me, but when i can't stand it anymore just watching them fighting without me, i also started attacking the "other" tribe. it really felt good because in there, i was a good fighter! :) i felt like a super human being. :) (yeah, obviously, i enjoyed it a lot) - the funny thing was, i saw ms. ai ai delas alas, (the filipino actress) and i killed her too. (well, in my dream, she's one of the "other" vampires).

the difference bet. us (vampires) was that our kind has pupils that are bigger than a normal person has, and it's really dark (really really black), and the other kinds' eyes are like a cat's.

and then.. poof! i heard my mom saying HEY!!!! DON'T YOU HAVE A CLASS!!!!????

confused hopeless romantic

i don't understand why of all the jobs that he tried his luck, none of them liked or accepted him. and even if he's not yet experienced in the field that he's trying to apply (call center by the way), he's still choosy. if the salary is too low, or the system is not good, he won't like it.. *sigh* as if...

anyway, had a dream last night, about someone who's trying to do everything for me.. well, it only shows that until now i'm a hopeless romantic type of person, still longing for some affections, curious about what it feels to be surprised by the person who loves you so much... i am married, but have never experienced these things...
